Working with watercolors this semester was a lot of fun for me. I used them on so many different projects that I need to replace most of my colors now. They can be a struggle at times. My patience isn’t always the greatest. I will repeat that over and over again because it is so true. Waiting for watercolor to dry in order to layer more on top of it, isn’t fun. I would always end up making my colors bleed or take away from what I already had. I felt like I was ruining my paintings half the time.

Once I finished my paintings, I felt more accomplished with them. One term that I have heard a lot this semester and have come to live by with my art is, “Trust the process.” When you start something, it doesn’t always look the greatest in the beginning. The more you work at it, the better it becomes. That goes with all art. Watercolor is a beautiful medium to use. You just need patience to work with it. I felt like this entire semester pushed me out of my comfort zone. I would have given up on many things almost instantly before. Now I have learned some patience with my art. Its okay to let things dry. It is okay to take your time on projects. Not everything has to be rushed to finish.

When I started to trust the process, I started to enjoy watercolor a lot more. Watercolors show a different side to the story. It can be lighter and more elegant in a way. Kind of whimsical yet transparent. I love being able to mix the colors and try something new with it. We had to create six watercolor paintings. Each of the paintings was a different color theory. Analogous, complementary, monochromatic, triadic, etc. Before this class, I wasn’t able to remember all of those. Now that I have painting them each individually, I feel a little bit more confident with it. Working with watercolors has helped open my eyes to new possibilities. I find it amazing at what art can do for me.

Learn your patience. Let the paint dry. Enjoy your work. Give yourself a break.
